Ex SNOWJACK – SNOWBOARDING TRIP
3 RIFLES recently took part on Ex SNOWJACK, The Army Snowboard Championships. Taking five riders with varying levels of experience to compete as a unit in Flachau, Austria. The exercise itself consisted of a zero week, followed by two weeks of three separate competitions: Parallel Grand Slalom (PGS), Snowboard Boardercross (SBX) and Freestyle.
Snowboarding isn’t all about physical fitness and balance, there is an element of general robustness and confidence – there will be times when you have a fall. These falls won’t necessarily injure you, but they test your confidence. The key is being able to get back up and have the confidence to try and land that backflip or complete the PGS
at speeds of over 60KPH. Once again,
3 RIFLES managed to retain The Open Infantry Unit Trophy, dominating and
gaining experience in each of the disciplines.
Despite being a novice, his first time on a snowboard only coming a year ago, LCpl Ross Webb of HQ Company, produced a valiant effort on the slalom. He was only milliseconds away from the fastest time over the course competing against riders with many years
of experience. After a demanding two weeks of racing, 3 RIFLES, managed to place third
in both the PGS and SBX Completions and overall. A hugely retention positive experience for all riders who thoroughly enjoyed it and gained experience in an exhilarating sport. LCpl Goudie
