MOD Worthy Down, nestled near Winchester, Hampshire, holds a pivotal position within the
Defence sector. It not only offers Initial and Subsequent Trade Training (ITT, STT) courses to essential personnel from the AGC, RLC, RE, RAF, and Royal Navy but also houses the headquarters of the AGC, RLC, and DCSp. The gym team, comprising a Tri-service group with a QMSI, three SNCOs (Army, RAF, RN), and PTIs from the AGC, RLC and RAF, boasts a wealth of experience that is evident in their problem-solving skills and the high standard of training delivered at Maddox Gymnasium. The facility is a dream for any fitness professional or enthusiast, featuring a large sports hall, squash courts, a well-equipped engine room, a Chassis Development area with top- notch equipment, outstanding outdoor tactical training facilities, and a dedicated Soldier Conditioning Review (SCR) suite for training and testing.
A primary goal for our esteemed team is to ensure that individuals undergoing ITT or STT receive top-tier physical development and learn the essentials of training, nutrition and recovery, making them efficient and effective in their chosen roles. In addition to physical training, the team is dedicated to the militarisation of trainees, focusing on mental fitness and discipline, which is a critical component of the training programme. The diversity of service policies, output standards, and role-specific fitness requirements present unique challenges that the team expertly navigates.
To cater for the varied needs of the courses, physical training is segmented into service-specific ‘Training Buckets,’ with programmes tailored by the single service PD SNCO and delivered by a dynamic team of AAPTIs. This approach ensures the dissemination and sharing of development, skills and knowledge across the Services.

Moreover, the Gym Staff is committed to serving not only the trainees but also the permanent staff of DSLA and the lodger units at Worthy Down. Despite the logistical challenges posed by the diverse work schedules from the equivalent of 7 Commanding Officers and a large number of personnel, the team excels in providing high-quality, comprehensive training that accommodates the needs of all three services, including some civil servants.
The Team regularly host seminars open to the entire site, which have been incredibly successful. These presentations allow experts to share their knowledge on physical fitness and health, significantly enhancing our role as RAPTCIs. Topics have ranged from general physical training to nutrition and recovery.
At Worthy Down, we are privileged to have access to exceptional facilities and equipment, which comes with a responsibility to maximise their use. The team is dedicated to supporting sport, military and charity events of various scales, demonstrating our commitment to excellence and community engagement.
During a busy period, two members of the team demonstrated dedication, diligence and the senior NCO attributes to be selected to attend the RAPTC Instructor
Course. We now look forward to supporting Sgt Rai and Cpl Coulthard on their journey in continuing
to enhance the reputation of the RAPTC across Defence.
