Course Design Cell (CDC), according to rumour, is all PowerPoints and Lesson Specifications however, as
you’ll learn, it’s not quite like that!
The team is led by Capt (MAA) McMullen RAPTC and over the past 12 months we have made significant progress with modernisation, inter-department communication and collaborative work strands. This couldn’t have been achieved without the hard work and dedication of the previous stakeholders within CDC, who clearly left the department primed and ready to move forward. Equally impressive is that this has all been achieved despite losing the Resource Cell, which includes a SSgt and Sgt post.
This year, the team have managed to initiate a partnership with the United Kingdom Strength & Conditioning Association (UKSCA) for the Class 1 Course, create a new obstacle course Train the Trainer package for the Navy and RAF and establish a “foot in the door” to attain a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) qualification for ASPT Instructors. Other work strands include a review of RAPTC Class 1 Course, RAPTC Selection and a realignment of the Reserve AAPTI Course, all in partnership with the Training Development Team (TDT).
Other opportunities, not directly linked to course design, has seen all the team take part in Adventurous Training, including skiing, parachuting and actively engage with Corps / Army Sports and two Short Term Training Team (STTT) deployments to Jordan.
The knowledge and skills learnt within CDC are not only essential in a training environment, but they’re also recognised, and in high demand, by other organisations and allied forces. The STTT deployment to Jordan is a prime example of that. ASPT’s 2IC, Maj (MAA) C Burnett RAPTC, and I travelled to Jordan in a Physical Development advisory role, and we soon realised that the most obvious

gap in the Jordanian Armed Forces was not the delivery of PT, but in the structure and design of the training. A perfect opportunity to add value to an allied force through my own experience of Course Design.
Throughout our Jordanian stay, we were located at Amman and Aqaba and, as you would expect, the 2IC and I were able to sample some of the local tourist hotspots including Petra, Wadi-Rum, The Dead Sea and, for once, the accommodation was amazing!
As we all know, you can’t sit still for long before people begin to move on. We’ve seen SSgt (SSI) Spence promoted to WO2, with an MBE! Sgt (SI) Ford is moving on promotion, and I will shortly be vacating upon promotion to WO1. To top it off, the OC will also depart!
So, as you can see there’s so much more to life in CDC and the ASPT than PowerPoints and Lesson Specifications! We have embraced all the challenges

and taken every opportunity afforded to us. Although I’ve only been here for 12 months, I have enjoyed every single day working with an exceptional team and a great working environment.
