1Ranger recently sent Service Personnel, as part of the Army Golf Association (AGA) Northen Ireland, to compete against AGA Scotland. The competition is held yearly, alternating
locations between Northern Ireland and Scotland. The competition is held over 1 day and consists of 36 holes of Golf. This year the competition was held at Leven Links Golf Course, Scotland.
Leven Links has a rich history dating back over 150 years. One of the very oldest pieces of golfing land anywhere in the world. The links course has stood the test of time and continues to host leading amateur and professional tournaments to this day.
The day started off with 18 holes played in Four-Ball (Better Ball) Format. Four-ball (AKA Better Ball) is a foursome tournament format. In four-ball, teams of two players compete. Each player plays their own ball, and the team records the lowest score on each hole. It’s a popular format for team events of all skill levels. AGA Scotland won this format by a landslide.
The afternoon finished the day off with 18 holes in Foursomes format. In foursomes, teams of two compete in an alternate shot format. Player A will tee off on odd numbered holes, and player B will tee off on even numbered holes. This format is typically scored as match play, where the team with the most holes won (rather than the lowest total number of strokes) wins. Again, AGA Scotland were victorious, but the margin was a lot closer.
Golf is one of the main sports held at 1 Ranger, with individuals often competing in competitions across Northern Ireland.
