Centre) and Spinnaker Sailing Club (Ringwood). The model is simple: the Trust bids for funding which pays for a mixture of introductory and taster sessions where the youngsters can try out any and all the water sports and then decide which they would like to pursue. We are very positive about qualifications, so young carers who develop an interest in (say) paddleboarding or dinghy sailing are encouraged to take the relevant certificates, all paid for by the RSYC Trust.
To date we have worked with four main young carers groups in Hampshire – Romsey, Southampton, New Forest and
Winchester. Last year we also ran taster sessions for a group of Wiltshire young carers. We are ambitious and would like to grow our reach, however, the number of taster and certificated sessions we can fund is directly related to our ability to raise funds to cover the costs.
This is where Club members can really help. The Club’s own 50:50 monthly draw was created with charity in mind and half the funds raised through the draw each month are gifted to the Commodore’s Charity, which is the RSYC Trust. (See website for information on taking part in the monthly draw). Donations can be made directly to the RSYC Trust and sponsorship of our fund raising activities is also greatly appreciated – see the Club’s calendar of events and regular newsletter.
In preparation for this summer, we have been talking to our young carer groups and water activities centres. We will be offering young carers two new water activities – wind surfing and power boat training, through SWAC.With the help
of Club volunteers, we will be organising four, free on-the-water activity days for our young carer groups at the Gins Clubhouse in May and July – a great opportunity for families to watch the fun from the shore and bring a picnic. Finally, to end the season we are planning a new Regatta event at the Spinnaker Sailing Club in September.
