YOUNG PLOTTERS
OUTDOOR
LEARNING
A Young Persons Account of working on an allotment
Some of my earliest memories from
childhood are visiting my nanna’s allotment
where I would pick berries, explore and
have picnics.
During my time I have spent at her
allotment, I have learnt many new skills, and
it has led the way to my experience on my
nanna’s allotment now where I am building
ambitious projects with power tools, helping
around the different plots and still exploring
all the allotment has to offer.
I believe my time at the allotment has
taught me just as well as any classroom and
I am confident in so many skills as a result.
These skills include planning projects, using
power tools, growing crops, craftsmanship
and so much more.
Some of the best tomatoes I have tasted
have come from my nanna’s allotment.
Some of my proudest projects have been
built on her allotment and also some of my
fondest memories have been made on her
allotment. I see the allotment as so much
more than a place where veggies are grown;
I see it as a staple of my childhood and as
part of my development growing up.
As a young person, I think it is so
important for us to learn these key skills
in life and experience essential learning
outside of school as well as just in school.
There will always be times where these
practical skills are useful, and I already feel
so confident to utilise them whenever they
are needed. My progression from a little
boy picking fruit to being a young person
building whatever ambitious project comes
to mind has been such a fun and positive
experience in my life and nothing short of
monumental.
So, I thank my nanna for giving me that
opportunity and I recommend anyone
to come down and learn what it takes to
manage an allotment.
