MEMBER BENEFITS
WHY NAS MEMBERS VALUE THEIR
ALLOTMENT INSURANCE
Our recent survey revealed that one of the most
popular benefits among our members is the insurance
coverage provided by the National Allotment Society.
This valuable protection offers peace of mind to
allotment holders, ensuring they are covered in case of
accidental injury or property damage. Here's a closer
look at how NAS insurance can benefit you.
Allotment Holders Liability Insurance
(ALI)
The NAS provides Allotment Holders
Liability Insurance (ALI) as part of
your membership, covering individual
plotholders, association members, and
life members under a robust Third-Party
Liability Insurance policy. This protection is
designed to shield members from claims
for accidental injury or property damage
caused while working on their allotment
plots or attending related events.
This comprehensive cover protects
members with up to £5 million in liability
for accidental bodily injury or damage
to property caused by their actions. For
example, if someone were injured while
on your plot, or your actions inadvertently
caused damage to someone else’s property,
this insurance would cover the costs of legal
defence, and any compensation awarded.
The policy is not just limited to incidents
on your allotment plot but also extends
to accidents or damages occurring at
allotment-related events or shows. It’s an
essential safety net, especially for those who
attend community gardening events or host
allotment tours, offering protection against
unforeseen accidents.
What is Covered and What’s Not
The NAS's insurance policy is designed
to provide liability cover, not property
insurance or personal injury cover. This
means that while your insurance will
cover third-party injury and property
damage, it will not extend to damage to
your own property or injuries sustained
by you personally. The cover also excludes
claims arising from activities like tree-felling,
large events with higher risk levels, and
heat-related processes like bonfires (unless
small and private).
This policy is specifically for
non-commercial use, which means
business-related claims are not covered.
So, if you’re using your plot for commercial
purposes or professional gardening, you
would need additional insurance.
How to Enrol and Stay Covered
While the insurance benefit is part of your
membership, you must proactively enrol
in the scheme to be covered. Enrolling is
simple—individual members or affiliated
associations must inform the NAS of
their intent to join the insurance scheme
and provide their contact details. This
process ensures the NAS has up-to-date
information about who is covered under
the policy. Members can opt out at any time
if they no longer wish to participate.
The NAS will not issue policy documents,
but members will receive confirmation
once they are enrolled in the master policy.
It’s important to keep the NAS updated
with any changes to your contact details to
ensure you remain covered.
