FIRST OF ITS KIND
IN DORSET
Congratulations to Bournemouth East
Allotment Society who are the first to
receive the Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Wildlife
Friendly Green Spaces Award for its
two sites. The concept originated with
DWT’s Garden Scheme, developed into a
Wildlife Friendly Green Spaces Scheme to
encompass a wider range of green spaces
and then added a version specifically for
allotments through their partnership with
NAS SW region.
It is not surprising that collecting the
evidence to enter was not difficult, given
how much biodiversity can be found on
allotments. Members easily identified
examples for every single one of the
categories, not just for the number required
to gain the award. The Rewilding Officers at
DWT were delighted to receive a report
containing photographic evidence coupled
with explanations of the impact on climate
change and particularly on species vital to
our environment. BEAS members enjoyed
the challenge of looking more closely
at their plots and surrounding areas, at
different times of the day and in varying
weather conditions, to capture and identify
the many creatures that inhabit the
sites.
We encourage as many sites
and plots as possible to enter
this scheme so visit www.
dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk to see
how you can enter.

Strulch – introduce the benefi ts
of mulching to your plot!
I developed Strulch at Leeds University and launched it with my
wife, Jackie.
We began selling it in 2005 and it has grown in popularity because it is
a quality organic product with a neutral pH that works on all soil types.
It can be used anywhere in the garden including vegetable plots. Strulch
works by blocking light which is needed for germination and the texture
of Strulch together with added minerals deters slugs and snails.
Add to bare soil to stop weed germination and around plants when they
reach a good size. We sell in 12, 25, 40 or 48 x 13.5 kg bags, and you can
buy our 9 kg bags from our stockists.
Find out about Strulch and view our stockists on our website –
www.strulch.co.uk or give me a call (01943 863610).
Happy cultivating. Geoff Whiteley.
