8 CHIRON CALLING
Thursday 27th July saw the WOs and SNCOs mess attend a team building afternoon held at the DATR Forge. After a safety brie ng about the 1000 degree res it was time for some healthy competition. The afternoon would include 2 activities, the rst being team chain making. We were shown how to successfully make a straight piece of metal into a circle and then left to create a 5 link chain. It quickly became apparent that the guys that work at the forge become acclimatised to the heat of the re, we however couldn’t stand next to it for more than a second. There were sparks ying and hammers being ung everywhere, all in the name of competition.
The teams were; WO1 (CRSM) Rowles, Sgt Davis and Sgt Cox, WO2 (RQMS) Speer and Sgt Baron, WO (CI) Woolman- lane, Sgt Jepson and Sgt Pound and SSgt Davis and Sgt Glading. WO2 (RQMS) Speer and Sgt Baron were crowned the winners, with the best chain link. The second activity was tting a shoe, this

included being scored individually for; Foot dressing: Remove shoe, trim foot, trim frogs, rasp level, brush clean and tidy, Fitting: selecting: correct shoe and size, heat up, adjust, burn on and Nail and Finish: correct number of nails, right size nails, placement of nails, height of nails. Everyone was given a leg and began their task, ling and shaping the hoof, tidying the frog and ensuring they had a at platform to t the shoe to. Then came shoe selection, we had to pick the closest
t and then leave it in the re to warm before shaping to t correctly. Once we had burnt the shoes on, tapped them into shape and cooled them down it was time to nail them on ensuring they came out the other side. We left WO1 Hayden and Bdr Morrison to score our efforts (see table for the results).
Sgt Davis was awarded the King Dick trophy, and has found a secret talent in farriery. Overall a good afternoon and everyone enjoyed themselves.
