Lieutenant Colonel Neil Lakin Royal Engineers Commanding Of cer 1st Military Working Dog Regiment
After studying for a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham, Neil Lakin entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2001 in order to be commissioned in the Corps of Royal Engineers. He served as a Troop Commander during the liberation of Iraq in 2003 before conducting construction tasks in Canada, the Falkland Islands and across the UK. As a Captain he instructed at the Royal School of Military Engineering; returned to Iraq as the Battlegroup Engineer with the Grenadier Guards; and deployed to Afghanistan as Adjutant of 26 Engineer Regiment.
Neil subsequently gained a Master’s Degree in Geospatial Information from the Royal School of Military Survey and Cran eld University in order to take up posts as the Geospatial advisor in the Divisional Headquarters in Germany and the Engineer Brigade Headquarters in Wiltshire. As a junior Major he completed the Army’s Intermediate Command course at Shrivenham before taking up a two year policy post in Whitehall. Neil subsequently commanded 8 Armoured Engineer Squadron as part of the Lead Armoured Task Force, exercising in Kenya, Canada, Ukraine and across the UK before taking command of 13 Geographic Squadron, charged with providing deployable Geospatial Support to Defence.
On promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, he worked in Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps before taking up his current post in July 2017 as Commanding Of cer of 1st Military Working Dog Regiment.
Neil has enjoyed participation in many sports over the years; competing at representative levels in swimming, triathlon and pentathlon when he was younger and more recently taking an Army Skydiving team to compete at the British National Championships. Currently he is a recreational tennis player, ParkRun’er and skier.
