 Ex Brimstone Shooting
Ex Brimstone was much anticipated by the OCdts despite leading on from an already plentiful and exhausting ADX. We jumped straight in by dry drilling, becoming more familiar with the SA80s ahead of zeroing the next day. Soon
we were taking the ACMT where some brilliant scores were achieved and the drills, discipline, and practice showed their worth. Because of the speed and efficiency of the training we were able
to break out the Glock 17, getting a taster and then moving on to go through transition shoot drills. This really put into perspective more realistic use of the weapons systems on top of the competition shooting we were focused on. It was a highlight of the camp with all Officer Cadets being able to try a new skill.
Similarly, on the final day we were able to use Lanley, the old Victorian
butt range where the targets had to be manually pulled up and down between shoots, this gave us the experience of being down the firing line as shoots were happening. Between all the details and bombing up magazines Cadets socialized, giving lecturettes they prepared on topics they were personally invested in, giving a relaxing background stimulus.
On the camp everyone improved
their shots to the point where 11 out of the 16 cadets were awarded uniform marksmanship badges from the Commander of the OTCs and the CO. Those included cadets who had never shot before and cadets, including myself, to which Marksman seemed distant to
achieve on that first day. All the cadets felt incredibly proud that Juniors who had not handled a weapon prior to ADX and shooting team returners were across the board achieving so highly.
One of the most enriching features of the camp was the ability to reconnect with our friends at the Cambridge University Rifle Association who were shooting at Bisley, where we had a cultural tour and historical brief on the home of shooting. We were able to watch the football, go bowling then to Pizza Express in Woking, and have a closing social on the last evening which consisted of visiting Bisley’s historic clubhouses including in the famous Artists.
