a 3-1 lead into the break. After a nervous second half and the first green card ever shown in football, the Sandhurst 1st XI secured a 3-2 win.
A Dutch international as the
opposition captain meant that the
volleyball was an uphill battle from
the off. Sandhurst courageously
took on the leggy Dutch once again, and even the block from OCdt Beard to secure the second set was not enough. Another loss but a further example of grit and determination shown by the British.
With the competition on the line the men and women of the Sandhurst basketball team took to the court. What followed was the most exhilarat- ing sporting event of the day. Captained by OCdt Dillon, the Sandhurst team won the game 48-45
with six seconds to spare to take the games to the final competition.
As a summative competition, the Superstars was the perfect way to end what had been a closely fought contest between the British and Dutch. Sixteen competitors took part in a gruelling challenge of aerobic capacity and muscular endurance.
Unfortunately for the OCdts of Sandhurst it was not to be and the disheartening calls of “no rep” will forever haunt the Sandhurst team.
Culminated by celebrations with the hosts and a karaoke night that untied all competitors, the event proved how sport can be so powerful, and, even though Sandhurst did not come home with the trophy, the Defence Engagement was a success and an enjoyable experience was had by all. We will seek revenge next year.
