18th Annual Competition on the
Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC)
for Military Academies

The International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL) held their 18th annual prestig- ious Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) Com- petition for Military Academies between the 24th and 29th March 2019. The event took place in Sanremo on the Italian Riviera, at the institute’s Headquarters. The Competition offers a unique international forum, where cadets from countries all across the globe, with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, learn to work together in a stimulating environment.
It is intended to complement national training of LOAC and to ensure Officer Cadets from the top military academies develop an early apprecia- tion of the critical importance of LOAC in multi- national military operations and its application within the context of a contemporary armed con- flict. This is achieved by dividing the Cadets into multi-national mixed teams representing different countries involved in a coalition within a fictitious escalating international military operation. based around actual events that have happened in previous operations, which really brings the competition to life.
This year Officer Cadets gathered from France, Germany, Georgia, Indonesia, Italy, Japan,
