Riflemen on the ranges
Exercise CHOSEN MAN saw the entire Battalion either competing in or enabling a week-long programme of events designed to assess our basic soldiering aptitude across the board. The centre piece was Ex CHOSEN MAN – the competition to find the best Rifleman in 1 RIFLES. In addition to the Chosen Man competition this year 1 RIFLES expanded to include the Skirmisher Compe- tition for the JNCOs and a test exercise for the Pls Comds and Sjts.
The Riflemen competed as individuals
in a series of military skills over three days that included shooting, medical, CQB, ground sign awareness, weapon handling, military knowledge, communications and lots of fitness. The competition ended with a sword lane run by almost all the WOs and CSjts to test determination and controlled aggression. The exercise gave the Riflemen the opportunity to judge themselves against their peers and to identify where they need to focus.

The physical challenge
It was a hard-fought competition with Rfn Stevens being awarded the Baker Rifle and the title of Chosen Man 2020. Rfn Stevens then went on to prove his skills by coming top of the subsequent 5 RIFLES JNCO
Cadre and promoting to LCpl. Ex CHOSEN MAN proved once again that excellent, challenging training can be conducted within the constraints of COVID so that we are ready for whatever our Riflemen are required to do home or abroad.
