Exercise Northern Bugle 5 was an Adventure Training Package that took place in September 2020. The group was based on Kinlochleven Training Centre in Scotland and had the opportunity to explore the local areas of Loch Leven, Nevis Trail Centre, and the Glen Coe Mountain Region.
Those taking part were introduced to a variety of challenging outdoor pursuits that provided an opportunity for them to enhance teamwork, leadership, moral and physical fitness by exposing them to controlled risk through a multi activity package.
The expedition began with a short
road move from Dreghorn Barracks to the Kinlochleven Training Centre. On arrival the groups moved into a rotation of activities including mountain biking, hill walking and kayaking.
Accommodated in an undeniably scenic and idyllic location, the walkers planed most of their routes direct from the training centre and explored the peaks of Meall an Doire Dharaich and Meall na Duibhe. The terrain was excellent and once elevated produced some breath-taking views, particular overlooking the picturesque Loch Leven. Whilst Mountain- eering was not as intense as some of the other activities it was equally physically challenging and provided a great opportunity to unwind amongst the beauty of the Highlands.
The Kayak group launched the boats from the south side of Loch Leven and explored the eastern side of the Loch. Those that were lucky enough had the opportunity to paddle alongside the occasional seal. The weather conditions remained kind throughout and the odd capsize drill and water games were welcomed.
The mountain biking trails at Nevis Range were excellent and provided the perfect level
of exposure for all ability levels. The Battalion’s new fleet of bicycles were put to the test as the groups progressed through the difficulty levels of the trails. With something for all, the groups were split by ability and enjoyed being challenged on the respective routes. The occasional close call or minor fall helped keep moral high and the banter flowing.
Throughout the week there was also
a tremendous opportunity to conduct an external outdoor pursuit activity. The company leading with the training was Vertical Descents Limited and they provided a first-class experi- ence. The water levels were perfect, enabling the group to enjoy canyoning in the very best of conditions. This undoubtedly proved the highlight of the week for many. The high-oc- tane trip down the canyon included natural slides, jump off’s and zip lines proved not for the faint hearted. The classic banter was rife for those that bottled “The big jump”.
The adventure training was an excellent opportunity to enjoy a week away from Battalion life; all personnel relished the opportunities and thoroughly enjoyed fantastic outdoor activities in some of Scotland’s most scenic areas.
