The Battalion training weekend over Remembrance Sunday went virtual. The first day focused on Op SMART, which was the Army’s mental health and resilience training. A great set of presentations were delivered over the course
of the morning before key members of the Battalion hosted breakaway groups after lunch. The day concluded with a PT session. It’s rumoured that even Joe Wicks is getting tips on how to conduct virtual PT from the 8 RIFLES team PTI!
On the 8th November, to
mark Remembrance Sunday,
The Battalion gathered as a whole with elements of other reserve units from 4X, to remember those who have fallen across all conflicts. The main event saw the 8 RIFLES Padre conduct a service complete with bugle calls and hymns. Each Company also gave its own presentations, focusing on a member of the RIFLES who made the ultimate sacrifice. A very poignant day all round.

 Christmas Weekend
As Christmas approached and the country was exiting its second national lockdown everyone at 8 RIFLES was keen to get back to training and make the most of all available opportunities.
Given that shooting is not only our core skill, but also an easy activity to do while remaining COVID safe, a Bn shooting competition seemed like
the ideal solution. As the first snow of winter fell, all Coys descended upon Wrothgill ranges. A full day of firing commenced, with individuals being tested on their skill with both rifle and a pistol. Harsh conditions did not deter the shooters, and as the day ended
it was clear by looking at the scores that some excellent results has been achieved. Even though the weekend took a different approach to Christmas, it was an obvious success and an excellent way to round-off what had been an exceedingly challenging year. Maj Sutherland
