It is a privilege as BC 79 that every four months I get to run alongside the newest cohort of commando gunners on the final leg of their 30 miler. Likewise, for BSM 79, he gets the extra privilege of walking into the offices of his fellow BSMs to deliver each new batch of commando gunners to them. But for every new Green Beret that comes through, there are a dozen more soldiers who were unsuccessful, despite spending up to 18 months in the training pipeline
before they are posted elsewhere. The dedication of the training team, welfare, gym and physio staff in maximising every gunner’s potential is a marathon effort and nothing demonstrates this better than the next article in this journal...
We continue to receive a high volume of interest from personnel volunteering to serve in the Commando Gunners, be that from initial trade training or those looking to transfer from the wider RA and across the Army. To what extent remains unknown, but the efforts of our information and media team in sharing our esprit de corps, travel opportunities and special operations capability to the volunteer, serving and veteran communities have been excellent and they have a lot more to give in this high growth area. Then there are the new cool kids on the block, a team solely focussed on tactical development through delivering quick impact capabilities to our soldiers; over the course of the last two and a half years they have trans- formed the Regiments micro RPAS fight tonight capability into something that is at the leading edge across defence; more to follow on this in the second 79 Bty article...
