THE TALE OF TWO FOUNTAINS
CHAPTER 1 NORTHAMPTON MARKET SQUARE
After the ‘Great Fire’ of Northampton in 1675, much of the town was carefully rebuilt with brick and stone and the streets made spacious and wide. The well-known English trader and writer, Daniel Defoe (author of novels Robinson Crusoe, 1719 and Moll Flanders, 1722), de- scribed Northampton as the ‘handsomest and best built town in all this part of England’. The town has developed fast since then but the historic charm of many old buildings still remains intact.
