Many of the buildings were provided with large cellars, used for storage. These often extended be- yond the buildings, underneath the surface of the Square. Some limited research we did on this indicates that the Market Square itself had its own network of cellars which may have been used for storage purposes by traders. One of the entrances to these cellars was from Mercers Row.
