THE TALE OF TWO FOUNTAINS
FOREWORD
So much has been written about the history of Northampton over the years and yet there is al- ways something new to be uncovered about this historic town. My interest in Arun and Jona’s research on the twin fountains stems from my family connection with the iron casting industry
in Northamptonshire. The Reynolds family began their business as T. Reynolds & Son in Little Har- rowden, near Wellingborough in about 1850. The Company remained until the latter part of the 20th century. Their earlier products such as cast-iron kerbstones can still be seen in Northamptonshire today. The Company was later known as Reynolds Hygrade Castings Limited.
Hence the history of the Eagle Foundry and the fountain manufactured for Northampton’s Market Square by its artist/designer, William Atkinson, makes interesting reading. So too, the story of its twin fountain erected in Bombay (now Mumbai) four years later. It is also a pleasure to see the numerous photographs in the book and learn about the links between Northampton and the city of Mumbai.
It is heartening to see the contribution of Northampton to a big city like Mumbai for future genera- tions to see and enjoy.
