EUROPEAN SNIPER COMPETITION
The US Army and European Best Sniper Competition 2023 was run by the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) Hohenfels. The Competition was a brilliant opportunity for 3 RIFLES’ snipers to learn and share experiences with other NATO sniper teams while representing the Battalion proudly on an international stage.
A three-man team travelled to JMRC Hohenfels in September to complete the seven-day event. LCpl McGlyn took on the shooting role with LCpl Kavanagh as the spotter, LCpl Pitts acted as team security. We took part in the cleverly designed competition that based the shoots off famous military films, both day and night. Most notably, the 1917 event saw our team dive into a flooded trench and fully submerge before making our way through a Sim bolt Close Quarter Battle shoot in a trench, which the American’s kindly filled with CS gas.
We are proud of our performance, finishing the competition in 18th place of 47 teams.
We were up against nations who were far better equipped, specifically in their night fighting capability. While unfortunately not placing higher, the knowledge we gained from competing against teams of their calibre and experience gained on the shoots were the highlight of the competition.
