ARMY ADVENTUROUS TRAINING WING INVERNESS
WO2 (QMSI) C White RAPTC
The Adventurous Training Foundation Wing (Inverness) has gone through a few changes this year, notably with a name change to the Army Adventurous Training Wing (Inverness) (AATW(I)). I arrived as the new Chief instructor in Aug 20. During my HOTO from the newly promoted WO1 (SMI) Tony Hicks we saw the first Sea Kayaking S3N course ‘proof of concept’ delivered by the wing. This trail proved successful and will be the first of several S3N courses delivered from this wing throughout 2021. Further developments have seen the Winter Climbing Foundation and Winter Mountain Foundation courses added to our delivery output.
Scotland’s natural beauty and open access of the Cairngorm National Park was the logical place for the ATG(A) mountain bike concentration and the first iteration of EX SCOTBIKE. 24 students from across defence attended EX SCOTBIKE, they gained some good Scottish logbook experience and achieved JSAT mountain bike qualifications from MBT to MBI. EX SCOTBIKE was a great success and will be delivered in Scotland on an annual basis (Spring Apr/May).
Moving forward we will refocus on 5-day JSAT courses and deliver skill development weeks for students wishing to gain additional AT experience; these weeks will be co-ordinated to precede some JSMTC leader and instructor courses. The wing has good access to the best civilian freelance instructors in the area and are looking forward to these development weeks and further opportunities in 2021/22.
This year will see the HO/TO of the AATW(I) Officer Commanding; Capt (MAA) G Osborne will take on his new role at the Army School of Physical Training as OC CDC and will be replaced by Capt (MAA) K Noteyoung RAPTC.
