As I approach my 3-year point with 1st Bn Irish Guards, this has been my most fulfilling and satisfying role to date.
Currently based in Hounslow, 1 IG is an Infantry unit with a keen interest in PD issues. Not only does the Battalion buy into RAPTC products and what we try to engrain into units (such as the APTS), the CoC actively challenge the PD program and want to understand the inner mechanics of PD so they can improve operational effectiveness on a micro-level. As an RAPTCI there can be no better feeling than having fruitful discussions with the CoC on the long-term strategic planning of PD topics and what direction the Battalion want to head in.
The role here is so diverse, I’ve never experienced any standard consistently. In my time here, the RAPTCI role has given me a global footprint. Kenya, Georgia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the Falkland Islands have all been locations I’ve travelled and delivered PD. From acclimatization training to Short Term Training (STT) Courses.
A key-enabling factor for these opportunities to travel is the sub- unit commanders appreciating the value of having the RAPTCI with them in location. Like any RAPTCI a key element to successful PD is an adept pool of AAPTIs; fortunately for me, the Battalion realized the sustained benefits of having full time gym staff and the service they provide for the Battalion. As this goes to print, a special mention needs to be given to LSgt (soon to be Sgt) Hanes from 1 IG, who is currently transiting through the Class 1 course and will soon join the RAPTC cohort.
I’d imagine, like most RAPTCIs, COVID-19 brought a plethora of challenges. Not only the delivery of PD, but also the obstacle of keeping AAPTIs current and innovative to deliver PD at sub- unit level. The COVID outbreak sent ripples across the Battalion, as we were parachuted into a variety of non-military type roles,
such as military Covid testing units, supporting NHS ambulance drivers, and 1 IG SP deployed to deliver the Covid vaccine. Taking these issues into account, I haven’t physically had all my AAPTIs together for nearly 12 months. Zoom and Facetime has been the main method of communication which ensured PD delivery stayed consistent across the Battalion.
This has also impacted on the Battalions current fitness levels, with certain sub-units deployed and others at home. Personal fitness levels have fluctuated, some sub-units are very adept, other lack conditioning. This presents an opportunity to go back to basics and deliver incremental sessions to get the Battalion to a respectable baseline standard of fitness.
Fortunately for 1 IG, there’s a tangible goal ahead. Exercise Rattlesnake, In 2021 the Battalion will deploy to Louisiana USA and this will give 1 IG the extra motivation to regain personal fitness levels and showcase their Infanteering talent alongside our American Allies.
Moving forward, like most Regiments/Battalions we’re subject to a relentless FoE, and our next obstacle is relocating the Battalion to Aldershot in 2021.
Currently the Battalion is juggling deployments, individual career courses, battle camps, a unit relocation, plus Easter and summer leave before deploying to the USA. Once complete the Battalion will then return to the blue line, responsible for state ceremonial in Windsor, Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London.
To any RAPTCI who desires travel, adventure and a Unit who prioritise PD, 1 IG is a great place to be. As I prepare to move on, I wish SSgt (SSI) Qasim RAPTC the best of luck in a unit that I’m sure will bring fulfilment, challenge and travel.
