After spending the majority of last year recovering at home from a broken ankle, I was eager to get back and have a more productive year! The year began with a full PDA, which went very well considering the gap in post for a long period before I arrived. Shortly after this, I then had to start planning for another Boxing event, which was to serve as part of the Commanding Officer’s Shield. The event was cancelled at the last minute due to covid-19, but the planning for this event places us in a strong position for the efficient organisation of future events so it wasn’t a wasted effort!

After arriving back to work, I also set about developing the gym. The fitness facilities around camp are very poor and it seems that every attempt to develop these has always stopped because of the uncertainty of the next unit move. The Regiment moved back from Germany in 2010 and Bicester was only going to be a temporary location before moving again to Catterick. However, 11 years later, the unit remain in Bicester and have recently been told that the Regiment will stay here until at least 2027. We began by redesigning

the space within the gym by relocating the boxing ring and creating more space for Olympic lifting. I am now in the process of securing funding for additional sports facilities and I will continue to do this for the duration of my time with this unit.
At the start and end of 2020, I was lucky enough to join the GB Para Nordic ski team for training camps in Ostersund, Sweden, in preparation for qualifying races leading up to the 2022 Winter Paralympic Games in Beijing. During these camps and when I wasn’t complaining about the
cold and the food, I assisted the athletes in each session including training both on and off the snow. My main role was to assist on the range. For safety reasons and in some cases, due to nature of an athlete’s disability, coaches are required to pass a weapon to the athlete on the firing point, which requires coordination when multiple athletes reach the range at the same time in the race. Hopefully, I will be able to attend more training camps throughout the year and continue to help the team.
