Academy Sandhurst in the Summer of 2021 providing parity of assessment for the future generation of the SSE workforce requirement and I am very confident our Corps senior Warrant Officers will do exceptionally well on this platform. The delivery of a pan-Army AOSB sets the conditions for the potential creation of a merged officer cohort, bringing together the DE and LE officers with a single Terms of Service from 2023.
Throughout these significant change programmes we continue to receive outstanding support from both the Colonel Commandant, Lt Gen (Retired) James Bashall CB CBE and Commandant, Brigadier Edward Chamberlain, whom, I might add, has extended his tenure as Commandant until September 2022, which is fantastic news for the Corps; thank you both.
It would be remiss of me if I didn’t highlight the fantastic work of the Association Executive and their involvement during the Pandemic, which has allowed us to flourish as an Association, continuing to forecast opportunities for both our serving and retired communities. With Lt Col (Retd) Gary Jones and Mrs Jules Fairclough at the helm, we could not be in a better place, ensuring the Association as a collective is supported in its delivery of activity and they have done an exceptional job. Gary has been fixed, working tirelessly to ensure I was read into Association business as SMAA and that we are operating in line with the charities commission, managing the accounts, be it investments or in support of activities, post COVID, as well as planning our future events.
Eli Dawson our museum curator continues to ensure the preservation of our heritage develops but he has also been key to putting the museum on the virtual platform, providing countless virtual tours during the pandemic, with real tangible effect. I urge all of you to visit virtually, or physically when we are permitted to do so - you will not be disappointed!
Next year will be the Biennial Reunion, which I hope will be physical in nature, so that we can all meet in a social setting and catch-up on the last two years. Last year sadly wasn’t to be, as we celebrated the 160th. That said, we marked the occasion and took ownership of a new Silver piece to commemorate this milestone. A huge thank you to Maj (MAA) Bren Reese and Gary Jones in realising this project during a Pandemic; it wasn’t easy. The piece resides in the Museum for all to see but will be on display at various dinners and gatherings leading up to the Reunion in 2022 - where you will be able see it in all its splendour.
For now, sit back, enjoy this publication, stay safe and I very much look forward to seeing as many of you as I can in late 2021 / 22; either at the Regional Study Periods / unit visits for those that are serving and Association Dinners for our retired members.
