nicely poised project which sees the Regiment now with a footprint in Gordon Barracks, Aberdeen.
The Regiment departed on Summer Leave with a flurry of social activity, including a Redford Barracks hosted Beating to Quarters. The August break, much needed had some limited Sqn-level activity which then grew into prepara- tions for the joint Annual Deployment Training event, this year to be a Super-event, jointly conducted with Queen’s Own Yeomanry across six different UK locations; Cupar, Barrybuddon, Leuchars, Leconsfield, Bovington & Redford Barracks, Edinburgh. The net result of the 16 day event was an added 17 trained Jackal crews across both Regiments. Quietly on the west coast of Scotland, A Sqn had been conducting Ex ROBUST WOLF, under the mentorship of Capt Alastair Coombe SNIY & Capt Joe Wightman RY. This involved arduous activity over Garelochhead, it embraced Glasgow & Strathclyde Officer Training Corps (GSUOTC) in preparations for Ex CAMBRIAN PATROL.
As the ADT period completed, a switch-fire of focus began in delivering A Sqn to Wales in good order for the CAMBRIAN PATROL. GSUOTC completed the exercise
achieving a Bronze medal, commendably assisted by A Sqn SNIY. Our own team measured supremely well to achieve the same outcome, the first medal in the decade’s history of the Regiment, a Bronze & a proud but weary team with a delighted Capt Coombe.
With less than ten months yet to run, the Commanding Officer, Lt Col Mark S Gannon SNIY, will be due to the handover the Regiment to successor, Lt Col Terry Warburton. The Regiment is developing nicely through an & effervescent period of change & challenge, one that is made more stable by having increasing Paired activity & ‘jointry’ with The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Projecting forward, SNIY will assist SCOTS DG in June 2024 by providing added workforce for the Task Force Hannibal requirement on Salisbury Plain. The event will co-align with the Regiment’s Annual Deployment Training over the same period, also in-place on Salisbury Plain. It stands to be a mutually prosperous period & one that will see the ever-alive relationship grow to provided increased Light Cavalry capability to Defence.
