the tradition of young, passionate boxers at this Regiment
continue.
2024 promises to be an exciting year for Boxing here as we look to build upon the successes of 2023. We are sending Trooper Leary and Lance Corporal McGarry to get their Level 1 coaching qualification. Also returning to regimental duty is WO2 Kyle, who has been a part of the fabric of SCOTS DG Boxing for many years. The focal point of the year will be the Cavalry Cup, with the format changing to host an RAC wide training camp. I have no doubt we will be able to field a strong team.
      SQUASH
Lt C Adam
Squash continued to be a popular sport at the Regiment in 2023, particularly in the winter months when an indoor court provides some respite from horizontal rain. The Wednesday afternoon has grown in strength with a large group of junior soldiers having taken it up this year, which has been great to see. Towards the top end of our club, we suffered a setback as Corporal Chinsen, a real squash talent, took a step back from the sport this year. Big boots to fill but Corporal Morrison is taking well to the sport, as is Corporal Duncan.
The big tournament of the year is naturally the Hudson’s Horse down in Tidworth and despite mounted ranges and other Wessex Storm prep we managed to field a team. Due to a lack of availability the team was comprised of Corporal Morrison and myself. It was in fact fortunate we comprised a mere two as the hire car thrifty had booked us was a two-seater sports car due
to lack of availability. Tremendous fun but not the most practical transport option had we numbered more!
Corporal Morrison and I played well against a good standard of Squash players, finishing second in our respective groups and amassing enough points to finish 3rd overall, although needing a minimum of three players to win a team place we didn’t bring back any silverware. RAC team membership beckoned but the army championships fell during Wessex Storm and was not the priority! With the current growth of the Squash Wednesday practice and the developing skillsets of the junior soldiers, I have full confidence that in next years tournament we will be able to field a fuller and more competitive team.
