 Jersey Shows
Two horticultural shows have been
held in Jersey during the past few months with the most recent in October providing an opportunity for gardeners to show off their heaviest and largest examples of fruit and vegetables.
Organised by the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society and held at the Royal Jersey Showground,
the annual Autumn Fair again saw some sizeable pumpkins on display and some friendly rivalry between members of the Le Sueur family. Overall winner was Richard Le Sueur’s specimen of 500.7lbs which weighed slightly more than the 482.4lb pumpkin entered by his grandsons Corey (6) and Joseph (8) Delaney.
In the show classes, which took in everything from produce, flowers, plants, and floral arrangements to preserves and cakes, the overall top award went to an impressive basket of mixed vegetables grown by the States of Jersey Prison Service.
The Jersey Association of the National Vegetable Society also won an award for the best collection of not less than 12 kinds of vegetables, entered by a club, society, institution, commercial entity, or group
of people. This much-admired display of locally grown produce was set in a cart.
The best fruit entry was Carole Mourant’s collection of cider apples and first-time entrant, Jane Harvey took the award for preserves with her quince jelly.
A horticultural show was also held at
the end of August with the supreme award going to an artistically arranged display of produce, grown by Kevin Roberts at his allotment at the F J Ahier Country Gardens. Three magnificent leeks entered by the States of Jersey Prison Service took reserve position. The leeks had earlier been chosen as the best entry in the vegetable classes, while the winner of the fruit section was Linda Mollet’s cape gooseberries.
