30 Platoon Ghanaian Cultural Event
Starting Sandhurst, every OCdt is excited to work, live and make friends with the International Cadets in their platoon. Part of this experience has been three platoon self-delivered cultural evenings over the Commissioning Course.
The final of three cultural nights for our platoon at Sandhurst was the Ghana- ian night. A chance for our Ghanaian Cadet to show off the culture, and most importantly the food of his homeland. The evening started with a 45-minute PowerPoint presentation of his culture, and he encouraged us all to come to visit Ghana in our professional and per- sonal lives. The presentation covered world celebrities who have visited the country, tourist sites, festivals, and the country’s beliefs and lifestyles.
After the presentation, we got stuck into the food bought for the occasion. The food on offer was as follows; jollof rice, fried rice, fried plantain, vegetable soup, beans, fried chicken, fried beef and chilli plantain crisps. A warning for the person who is less equipped to deal with spicy food, Ghanaian food is spicy. The sauces were more than most of the platoon could handle. The star of the show was the ‘Malt Guinness’ which didn’t taste much like a pint of Guinness, our Northern Irish Cadet complained but it was still delicious.
The Ghanian night was a resound- ing success, our platoon has a better understanding of Ghana, was provided with a fantastic meal and learnt some memorable songs that we sing to this day.
