by all, aided by the unseasonably dry and warm weather.
The run up to Christmas saw focus switch to ensuring that readiness was maintained and the start states were met for regimental ranges in January 23. An intensive period of small arms ranges were organised and delivered by commanders at all levels, with special mentions to Lt Griffiths, Lt Emanuel, 2Lt Hare, Cpl Pennington and LCpl Newcombe. With the start states met the squadron focused on individual courses, with the focus being on ensuring the troopers were able to complete their Part 2 Signals (run by Cpl Hart), their GPMG course, B3 gunnery and the oppor- tunity to complete a team medic course.
Interspersed with this, the squadron won the Balaklava Day run at Tan Hill with ease (first place went to the squadrons new- est officer, 2Lt Frankie Lennon) and sent a strong representation to help the regi- ment win (again) the 1(UK)Div Bismarck Challenge – with a well done going to 2Lt Lennon, Lt Griffiths, 2Lt Hare, WO2 Costello, Sgt Thurtle, Cpl Hampson and LCpl Thompson.
Looking ahead The Empire has an action packed 2023 to look forward to. Post Christmas leave the squadron will deploy on regimental ranges in Castlemartin prior to entering a period of preparation ready for deployment on Ex Spring Storm in Estonia, as part of an LD led battlegroup.
The Empire has had an exceptional year, dealing admirably with uncertainty and goes into Christmas leave with the condi- tions set for a fantastic year ahead.
