The football season in 2022 was a slow starter compared to the pace of Regimental life. Career courses and exer- cises all congested into a busy start to the year. Nevertheless, we were determined to win as much silverware as possible.
Behind the scenes, Capt Turner and SSgt Jimmy Garsrud remain the administra- tion cheese sandwiches conducting the vital work that no one else wants to do. The dynamic duo of manager, Sgt Jeffries, and coach, Cpl (busiest man in NATO) Fensome, have brought in an abundance of fresh ideas with a young team that has exciting times ahead. A few of the old guard remain – SSgt (King of Poland) Cheshire, Sgt’s (Danny Dragoon) Rae and McDonnell, who all take up respon- sibilities of Captaincy when available. Sgt Mallen has hung his gloves up again for the 9th time (see you next season again Scott) and we even managed to get a few subbies to run around like headless chick- ens for 90 mins.
We are seeing some great new faces com- ing to training and always improving as a team. The new 4G pitch at Wavell has recently opened and has become the home ground of the Football Team. It allows us to play a better brand of football and not worry about twisting our ankles on numer- ous rabbit holes. A big representation now proceeds us down at RAC football with Sgt’s Hewson and Rae, LCpl Battle and

Tprs Dunn, Law and Swindlehurst all winning caps this season. Congratulations to them for getting into a competitive RAC team.
Last season saw us compete in 4 different competitions, the highlight being a narrow 2-1 defeat to RTR in the Cav Cup Semi- final. This was still an impressive result, as we had recently returned from Wessex Storm with limited training time avail- able. We came mid table in a very competi- tive UK North League and reached the 3rd round of the Army Major Unit Cup. This season we have already begun train- ing and played in the UK North 7a-side Tournament, entering 2 competitive teams. The Army Cup 1st round saw us get knocked out against 5RA in a tough game against a team a league higher than us.

As we look ahead to 2023 with a new kit inbound (Cpl ‘Ginge’ Lauder has already requested an XL), our aim is to win the UK North League and the Cav Cup. To reward the hard work, commitment, and determi- nation of all the squad, plans are afoot to conduct an overseas Regimental football Tour next year (I’m sure there will be a few stories to tell in next year’s edition).
