• Check them all the time and keep them warm.
If the person is NOT BREATHING then you must ring 999 for an ambulance and ask for a de brillator (AED) if available.
Many rural areas
have AEDs in
public areas. These
machines are easy to
use and can be used by anyone – you do not need training – they talk to you.
Once this has been done start CPR.
• Start by pressing down on the
person’s chest
• Press 30 times about 5-6 cm deep at
a rate of 100-120 per minute.
• If you are trained in CPR then give the
person two rescue breaths.
• If you are not trained or not willing
to give rescue breaths continue with chest compressions only.
Continue the cycle of 30 chest compressions and two rescue breaths until help arrives or the person recovers.
Heart Attack
Recognising the warning signs of a heart attack can reduce the risks of the person going into cardiac arrest. These signs vary between individuals and can easily be confused with other conditions, such as indigestion.
Generally, the person may have pains in the chest, which may radiate across the shoulders, down the arms or into the jaw. The person may feel weak, have pale clammy skin and be short of breath.
If you suspect a heart attack ring 999 straightaway; make the person comfortable and don’t give them anything to eat or drink.
