Die Führungsakademie der Bundeswehr (Part 1) Major CG Pyman
The National General-/Admiral-Staff Course (LGAN) runs for two years at the Fürungsakademie der Bundeswehr (FüAk). On LGAN 2021 there are 118 Teilnehmer (participants), of whom 19 are from other NATO nations, including three British officers (two Army). The German Teilnehmer represent the top 10% of Bundeswehr officers and most have experience of Afghanistan and/or Mali. The LGAN lasts for two years and will have a huge influence over the future careers of Heer (Army) Teilnehmer; it is possible but rare to reach Oberst (Colonel), but almost impossible to progress further, without attending the LGAN.
For British candidates, the APC counts the LGAN as equivalent to ICSC, ACSC and IG2. There are other overseas staff college opportunities, but only the German FüAk and American SAMS come without training deficits and with ACSC equivalence. There is also the opportunity to earn an MA at the Helmut Schmidt University. The year prior to attendance is spent on a German language course at Shrivenham prior to moving to Germany. International Teilnehmer begin with a six-week pre-course prior to the course beginning in October, visiting Naval bases and Air Force stations as well as the Army’s Demonstration and Training Exercise (the ALÜ). The visits included vis- its to submarine and surface fleets and the Luftwaffe´s reconnaissance capabilities as well as the A400M squadron recently returned from the Kabul evacua- tion, while the ALÜ mimics a brigade operation as a training aide for various Bundeswehr training courses.
The first Teilstreitkräftephase (single service phase) runs from October to Christmas leave: for the Army,
