Just as he was leaving the Army, John and Geraldine moved to Kinross,. Their daughter, Caroline, who lived nearby in Milnathort had two children, Nicole and Aaron whom John adored and whom he spent much time with, especially when Caroline was work- ing. John and Geraldine had a caravan at Connell near Oban for about 15 years and they took every chance they could to go there. John loved listening to the VHF radio of the planes that would fly overhead and also pottering about on the dinghy he had.

John contracted cancer shortly after Geraldine’s death and after treatment it went into remission. Unfortunately, his cancer returned and, after being admitted to Ninewells Hospital for treatment, he con- tracted sepsis and on the 13 October 2021 passed away peacefully with all his family at his bedside.
