The early part of 2021 saw B Squadron continuing to occupy its role as Op RESCRIPT SMEs; returning from a well-deserved Christmas Leave, the Mutants had graduated from testing centres to vaccination cen- tres, finding themselves scattered across Lanarkshire and, latterly, the remainder of Scotland throughout January. Crates flew off the shelves, as one squadron- member after another fell victim to the assembled cameras of the national press. Evidently a slow news month, the veritable journalism honeypot of vaccina- tion centres being set up by B Squadron eventually drew its biggest catch: the Prime Minister himself feeling the need to come and congratulate the Mutants for their efforts in moving chairs and tables. Once the snap of an awkward elbow bump with the PM was in the bag, it was time for B Squadron to move from its bounty of Scotland’s biggest and brightest sports hall complexes, to the hills of Dumfries and Galloway.
A most welcome whole-squadron run out, the Mutants deployed to Dumfriesshire in February, projecting in Jackal from Leuchars to hone their mounted recon- naissance skills. Widely agreed to be the coldest road move any of the Squadron members can remember, a well-resourced and dynamic exercise with an active enemy more than made up for it. Galloway Forest made for an excellent hunting ground for the Jackals and Coyotes of B Squadron, with the logging tracks and high features making for perfect routes and OP positions. With limited training areas where the legs of our vehicles can be truly stretched, the fighting troops of the Squadron revelled in the opportunity to tear around the stunning scenery absolutely plying their trade as mounted reconnaissance.
