30 EAGLE AND CARBINE
St Michael’s Golf Course in Leuchars. The event took the form of a Texas scramble to allow the non-golfers (which there were many!) had a chance of winning. There were also additional prizes to be won including closest to the pin.
The competitors were broken down in to six teams of three with the 6 most experienced golfers as team cap- tains. The morning started off with bacon rolls and a brief at St Michael’s club house before the first team, led by Cpl Kennedy teed off and got the competition under way, with the following 5 teams teeing off at 10 minute intervals.
During the day several key events happened; Cpl Kennedy drove the green on the 18th but required Cpl Daly to save his Eagle (Cpl Kennedy who would have had a Par otherwise). LCpl Campbell lost a grand total of 16 balls, managing a four-hole streak where he never lost one. Cfn Richardson failed to clear the ladies’ tee on several occasions!!
As the teams came in there was a clear overall winner, Team 3 captained by SSgt Will with Capt Shaw and Cfn MacDonald came in with an impressive 2 over par scratch. Followed not so closely by Team 4 captained by Sgt Hagen with Cpl Williams and Cpl Meeke with a 12 over par. Cpl Dance and LCpl Davies were the winners of the closest to the pin challenges with LCpl Davies getting an impressive 5ft from the pin. Unfortunately, there must always be a looser and closely coming in
last place was ASM Dolan and Sgt Anderson with 17 over par, luckily though they never went away empty handed winning the glorious wooden spoons!
The remainder of the LAD arrived, and the winners were announced as well as the other prizes being handed out. The entire LAD then had a sit down meal at St Michaels golf club. A great day was had by all with even a few of the non-golfers taking up golf on a semi-regular basis.
Mid-September saw another successful AT package run by HQ Sqn, in which several LAD personnel had the opportunity to get away mountain biking, rock climb- ing and hill walking. This year, as opposed to the usual Rothiemurchas Lodge, the training was based out of Cameron Barracks in the beautiful city of Inverness. This provided the opportunity to bag some of the further afield munroes whilst still accessing the Cairngorms.
The walking instructors (The ASM and the QMSI) had our 2 weeks made slightly more arduous by the fact that the package fell at time where the commit- ments had already been made to the annual Spean Bridge Commando March and the Loch Ness mara- thon. Normally taking in Ben MacDui, the Northern Corries and Cairngorm would be at sedate pace but the second Monday in the package saw a group that were on a mission completing the scenic round route in just under 6 hours, no mean feat.
