Captain JD McAleese
2021 has been an incredibly busy year for the Welfare Team, with COVID 19 restrictions easing and events back up and running.
January saw the Regiment return from Christmas leave under the new Commanding Officer Lt Col Graham Craig who arrived on his own, with Millie and the boys remaining down south until the school term ends.
With the Regiment busy getting ready for the training year ahead, the Welfare Team started planning for the eventuality that events would be allowed to re-start. First up was Easter, with some restrictions preventing the team from holding the traditional Easter celebra- tions we decided to push on with something a little different. The welfare clerk Mrs Susan Rooney was given the task of creating a treasure hunt with Sgt Del Brooke and LCpl Sid Patterson putting everything in
place. The event was well attended with all those tak- ing part receiving a prize.
The summer was a quiet affair again largely due to restrictions still in place and with the Regiment deployed on exercise Wessex Storm. During the sum- mer Millie, Rory and Monty joined the Commanding Officer in Leuchars. A warm welcome to Millie and the boys. Shortly after summer leave the Regiment had the chance to get together fully for the first time in almost two years with a weekend of fun to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Regiment’s amalgamation. On the Friday the serving Regiment took to the Royal Mile in Edinburgh for a parade down to Holyrood Palace, followed by a church service, watched by friends and family. After the service it was back to Leuchars for individual mess events.
The Saturday started off with a Regimental break- fast before all serving personnel marched towards the sports field for our annual sports day combined with highland games. In the evening it was time for every- one to let their hair down with a superbly organised all ranks party that was enjoyed by all who attended.
Only two weeks later the first real welfare event took place in the format of the Combat Campout. Families were invited to pitch a tent in the welfare garden for a night of fun and games. First up was the assault course followed by a game of adults vs kids rounders. The kids came out on top! Having built up an appetite, everyone moved inside for some chicken nuggets and pizza before setting off to the Commanding Officer’s house for s’mores. Once all the s’mores were consumed the kids were given the responsibility of navigating us all back to the Welfare Centre with the aid of some night vision goggles! Thankfully all the kids, adults and night vision equipment made it back in one piece. The night was finished off with popcorn and a movie before everyone crawled into their sleeping bags for some well-earned rest. The next morning saw eve- ryone woken up to a nice combat PT session before enjoying some bacon rolls for breakfast.
October saw Padre Oliver end his military service and move onto pastures new; we wish Andy, Eljana (Ela) and the children all the very best for the future.
