Maj Christie wasn’t completely alone in his accuracy however, LCpl Metcalf somehow managed to fire just over double the amount of rounds as the number of deer he returned with and when asked to explain how, he replied, “I’m an LMG Gunner”...
There will always be some missed opportunities, how- ever, they are what make the challenge of stalking deer so rewarding and the smiles on our faces at the end of the day as we recounted stories by the fire with a well- earned beer or dram of whisky were proof enough of how much of a success the expedition was and what an amazing experience the week continues to be.
Exercise Eagle’s Challenge has once again been a won- derful expedition: challenging and very close to our core business. It requires many skills demanded of a reconnaissance soldier: glassing to spot well camou- flaged deer and using dead ground to stalk stealthily
to within shootable range, before the ultimate test of one’s marksmanship, followed by the hard graft of extracting beasts off the hill; it tests fieldcraft and marksmanship to the highest level, against a truly wild animal that is the master of its environment.
This year has been an outstanding success, long may it continue.
Once again, the Regiment is extremely grateful to Charles Ramsay who very generously allows us to continue to stay and stalk at South Chesthill. Stalking parties we also able to stalk at Easter Logie, North Chesthill & Blackmount thanks to the generosity of Brigadier Jameson, Mr Alisdair Riddle and Mr Phillip Flemming respectively.
