Class Size Reduction Survey
You may be aware that a review of certain class sizes for the National Championships was conducted earlier in the year.
This was initiated due to a) the difficulties in growing these veg types (e.g. cost, set up and space required), b) lower quality of some entries exhibited e.g. a good set of three, with an additional two to make a poor set of five. c) the low quantities of entries seen in some shows. Higher quantities were felt to be difficult to achieve, resulting in an exhibitor to perhaps having to pick and choose which shows they supported, which in some cases would be to the detriment of the smaller shows or even a Branch Championship. “I’msavingmystufffortheNational”. Itwasalsonotedthat, foralot of other veg types the quantity’s required to be staged was already the same as required for a Branch.
After a full review of entries through the past 8 years at the National Championships, the following veg types were identified by the Trustees as requiring a review; Blanch Leeks, Large Exhibition Onions, Celery and the long roots, namely Carrots , Parsnips and Beetroot, however rather than decide in isolation, it was agreed that exhibitors should be afforded the opportunity to give their feedback as they are the people that have to grow the veg and exhibit it.
The results can be seen in the chart which gave rise to a lengthy debate. From this it was agreed to carry out an initial trial for long Beetroot, reducing it from a quantity of 5 down to 3. A further review will be conducted after this year’s championships at Ardingly.
