Brunei Dental Team visit to Hornbill School and Treetops Nursery
Cpl Madan Limbu RADC
In conjunction with National Smile Month 2019, Dental Centre Seria, Brunei, conducted an oral health promotion
event at Hornbill School from the period
of 4 - 6 June 19. The school is primarily open for all the BFB community children and provides the same level of education as the United Kingdom curriculum. The total number of students at the school is approximately 360 with the age range from 3 - 12 years old.
The main aim of the event was to promote and educate the children about oral health from a young age, and also to familiarise them about the dental environment.
During the event, the dental team provided
interactive sessions to all the classes. During the sessions, a power point presentation about oral health, made by Maj Kate Porter, was shown to the children. The simple
key messages such as diet, importance of brushing and regular visits to the dentist were discussed. All the students were actively engaged during the session and they asked lots of questions. The younger students also enjoyed brushing the teeth
of the dinosaur puppet. Promotional items such as sand timers, leaflets, stickers, pencils, tooth brushing charts, etc. were provided by generous funding from SSAFA and given out to the children. In addition to Dental Staff, the Health Visitors and a BFBS
presenter also attended the event. All the students and teachers were very thankful to the dental team for the visit.
Following on from the success at Hornbill School, the dental team also conducted an oral health education session at Treetops Nursery located in Mumong. The Nursery holds children from the age range of 2 - 3 years. The parents were also invited for
the oral health session. The simple power point presentation about oral health was shown followed by an interactive lesson on brushing and diet. The parents were actively involved and were given the key oral health messages which are required to look after their young ones.
