the history of Sandhurst itself, and the numerous artefacts such as the cannons from Waterloo, I have been in awe of the achievements of the Brit- ish Army and humbled by the knowledge that I have been given the privilege of walking the same halls that some of history’s greatest figures have already trodden.
The Sandhurst Community has been one of the highlights of this posting and is something my family is sure to treasure on our return to Australia in 2025. The Sandhurst Station Nursery, weekly morning teas and events such as the Christmas Lights have given us a great introduction into the enviable British Army support networks available to serving members. The patch and its numerous WhatsApp groups have exposed us to community who are so eager to help each other out in times of need or stress, or even just when someone is keen for a brew. It is something we’ve lost in Australia to some extent as our patches have spread further out and away from camp.
Moving across to the other side of the world with two toddlers and a heavily pregnant wife was a
bold choice to make; a once in a lifetime oppor- tunity that was too good to pass up. Having the United Kingdom and Europe on your doorstep is such a privilege and we’ve been making the most of our leave to explore this side of the world. The more our new friends at Sandhurst tell us about this amazing country the more we’ve come to real- ise we’ll never be able to cross everything off our list so it is nice to have made good friends who we will be sure to come back to visit at every chance we get.
I’m extremely thankful for the opportunity to join a short list of Australian Officers who have had the privilege of instructing the future leaders of the British Army. Being entrusted with inculcating the values and standards, skills, knowledge and atti- tude it takes to be a British Army Officer is a daunt- ing prospect, but one I will treasure amongst the fondest of my career.
