Beaumont Hamel – Hawthorn Ridge
This was a particularly interesting area because the attack was supposed to be supported by the detonation of a mine at 0728 leaving 2 minutes for the Allies to get to the other side of the crater. However, due to the week-long bombardment suffered by the Germans they were eager for revenge. They managed to set machine gun positions and defeated the Allies.
Monteauban
We also visited a wood just outside of the village of Monteauban and learnt about the significance of the trench systems that were dug by both the Allied and German forces.
Day 3: The Somme, France
We finished the battlefield study by visiting the joint British – French Thiepval Memorial. The scale and awe of the memorial is breath- taking, and the 72,000 names that are on the memorial will never be forgotten. To round
off the battlefield study we had our own remembrance service at the memorial during which the Last Post was played on a 100 year old Cambridgeshire Regimental bugle and hymns were sung – a memorable and moving experience.
