to an anchorage up the coast. Here CUOTC enjoyed developing a healthy rivalry with other boats, especially the cheerful Curlew and fun-loving Widgeon crews. We then weighed anchor for a fairly long night sail to Faarborg.
The experience of sailing under starlight was
new to many, with pilotage by lights an exciting experience, and the light winds providing a peaceful respite from the excesses of the night before. The day after saw tired crews rouse themselves for some dinghy-based activity, which Pochard excelled at, before some stronger winds provided a zesty voyage down to the picturesque town of Aeroskorbing. Here all hands laid on to provide a peerless floury concoction which very nearly won first prize in the Great Blue Odin Bake Off, judged by those baked-goods connoisseurs, the crew of our support vessel, Baltic Swift.
After Aeroskorbing our route turned South again, with some wonderful days sailing near beautiful white sandy bars - if only we had been able to venture ashore. A spectacularly well managed ‘come dine with me’ and entertainments night at Marstal provided many happy memories: few will forget the enraptured faces of the Blue Odin masses as they listened enthralled to the exploits of the Cambridge Backgammon society. From Marstal we made Kappeln rather later in the day than anticipated, with a paucity of provisions rectified by a sprint for steaks at a local store. Finally from Kappeln we headed back to KYC,
for a final night of frivolities in both yacht club
Taking a moment to enjoy the Baltic sunshine
and town centre alike. This did not daunt us from cleaning the boats however: never has a backstay been cleaner than that of Pochard when the time came for the handover inspection.
We are indebted to the crew of Baltic Swift for all their hard work, and to the wider team at KYC for providing such happy memories. Closer to home, our own staff provided sterling support in the face of multiple challenges, and we thank JUO Chris Barton for organising the CUOTC crew into action. Thanks above all to Oxford UOTC for taking on the task of organising the whole trip, and to Giles Baxter for his vision and commitment to the cause of sailing with a smile. OCdt Wettern,
