  Mortar Platoon
The Mortar Platoon have had a very busy and rewarding year. The mortarmen have been required to deploy on numerous exercises across the globe alongside maintaining operational readiness in camp.
In the new year the soldiers from
2 MERCIAN completed a mechanised conversion cadre, this qualified them
to operate an 81mm mortar out of a Bulldog armoured vehicle. The soldiers from 2 MERCIAN were quick to establish themselves within the platoon and have been an asset since arriving.
Recently the soldiers completed a mortar numbers cadre, for the new members of the platoon this is a ‘zero
to hero’ on how to use the equipment. They have learnt the principles of mortar fire and how to apply it. Following the instructional phase, the now qualified
mortarmen deployed on a gruelling week on Salisbury Plain where they were tested on the tactical application of a mortar. The numbers cadre finished with a live fire period where the soldiers fired out of Bulldogs and as light role.
The work the mortarmen have put
in this year has left them well poised to tackle future deployments such as Op LINOTYPER in Poland and Op CABRIT in Estonia.

The 1 MERCIAN Anti-Tank platoon has demonstrated exceptional dedication and proficiency throughout the past year. Their accomplishments include completing the Anti-Tanks Cadre, providing crucial support during various Battalion exercises, and maintaining a high level of qualification in armoured and driving skills.
Notably, the Platoon supported the Battalion on Ex WARFIGHTER in Texas, USA, and Ex IRON STORM in Germany, earning commendation for their adept identification of enemy targets. The commitment extended again in Germany and Poland, with personnel participating in Op ACE’S LIGHTFOOT and Ex SARMIS.
Despite a demanding schedule, some members of the Platoon found time for some Adventure Training, showcasing the Platoon’s well-rounded approach. Several individuals achieved notable milestones, such as LCpl Pierce and LCpl Coggins passing the Anti-Tank Detachment Commanders Course, Cpl Hebb successfully passing PSBC, and Sgt Hoyte excelling in the Anti-Tank 2IC/PC Course.

Pte Waqanivere brought pride to the Battalion representing the Senior Army Rugby League Team in this year’s annual Tri -Service competition. Cpl Scarrott and Cpl Noone were also part of the Battalion Football Team that became the Army Champions. Their participation exemplifies the Platoons’
diverse talents, showcasing not only their military prowess but also their excellence in sports.
The departure of Capt Fossey marked
a transition as Lt Jarrett took over as OC Anti-Tank Platoon. The Platoon’s versatility, expertise, and commitment to personal development underscore their vital role and contribution within the Battalion.
