Battalion Activities
Football
This is the first season competing as a major unit since the formation of the new 1st Battalion with the huge benefit of pooling together the footballing soldiers within the regiment.
1 MERCIAN were runners up in last season’s Army Challenge Cup Final, and with the addition of players from the former 2 MERCIAN Football team, we are hoping they will add the missing link and deliver the first Major Units Trophy at 11-A-Side in the Regiment’s History.
The first major units’ trophy was secured in May 23 when 1 MERCIAN won the Army 6-A-Side competition in Grantham; they also secured the Southwest Division 1 title earlier in the year.
In the calendar year 22/23 the team have so far achieved the following:
• Winner – Walter Tull Trophy (Infantry Cup)
• Winner – Southwest Division 1
• Winner – Army 6-A-Side Competition
• Winner – KBR Challenge Trophy
• Runner Up – Southern League
Regional Trophy
• Runner Up – Southwest 6-A-Side

• Semi Finalist - Infantry 6-A-Side
Competition
The Football Team’s routine is to normally
train twice a week and play once; the team mantra is always to put a team out no matter the commitments of the unit. This has led to a large pool of talented and committed soldiers who love to play and represent the unit.
Against the busy backdrop of operations and training, the regiment is immensely
proud of its sporting teams, whether that be the battalion football team, the boxing team who competed in the army individuals and 12 Bde boxing last month, or the Nordic Skiing team. The offshoots of Army sport are a true reflection of being a Mercian Soldier: teamwork, commitment, and utter professionalism.
The Walter Tull Trophy is normally played
and concluded in late April early may, however due to the current operational tempo of the Army it was postponed repeatedly until 12 July 23.
The Final was played in Bulford between 1 MERCIAN and 5 RIFLES; both units happen to be based in Bulford creating a great opportunity for a big crowd and a good occasion.
