Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
WO1 J A Timperley, RSM
As the first ever person from the Regiment and its antecedent battalion to hold the position of Old College Regimental Sergeant Major I reflect fondly over my 30 months in office. Life in Old College
at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) is steeped in tradition and discipline. The historic College serves as the heart of RMAS, embodying a rich legacy that dates back to its establishment in 1801. I am immensely proud to have been selected to the position of Regimental Sergeant Major and represent the MERCIAN regiment.
Old College is not merely a physical structure but a symbol of the values and ethos that define the British Army. Officer Cadets undergo rigorous training within its hallowed halls, where they are instilled with the principles of leadership, integrity, and resilience. The strict regime and demanding routines contribute to the forging of future
officers. The Academy motto is “Serve to Lead” encapsulating the reciprocal relationship between service and leadership. It underscores the idea that effective leaders are dedicated to serving others, and through their leadership, they contribute to the greater good.
The architecture of Old College itself narrates
a story of history and heritage. The Sandhurst Heritage Trail, a prominent feature, takes Officer Cadets and visitors through key points, unravelling tales of the academy’s past. From the grand surroundings of the Indian Army Memorial Room to the solemnity of the Royal Memorial Chapel, each space within Old College resonates with significance.
Discipline is a cornerstone of life at Old College. Officer Cadets adhere to a structured training programme which is currently under review

under Lt Col Garrett and this team named Project ADAIR. Project ADAIR will be implemented from May 24 and will see Officer Cadets undertake 6 modularised packages each lasting 7 weeks long. This exciting change will ensure that the next generation of Officer Cadets are prepared for future conflict and have the resilience to deal with the needs of the Field Army.
Weeks 1-5
This process instils the basics of teamwork. Old College take OCdts from all different backgrounds and parts of society and gel them together as newly form teams. OCdts will undergo First Aid, Map Reading, Drill and in barracks administration during this period. A typical day will see OCdts start at 0630hrs and finish around 2200hrs. Many
