MCGEACHIN
Philip MCGEACHIN died on 4th July 2023. He served with the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment.
MEARES
Keith MEARES died on 11th January 2023. He served with the 3rd Battalion The Cheshire Regiment.
MILLER
Jason MILLER died on 9th October 2023. He served with The Staffordshire Regiment. His funeral took place on 23rd October at West Wing Streetly Crematorium.
MILLWARD
Michael John MILLWARD died on 19 February 2023.
MORAN
Cpl Terry MORAN, of Walsall, died on 29 December 2022 aged 67. Terry joined the Light Infantry & Mercian Volunteers in the early 70’s before enlisting into the 1st Bn the Staffordshire Regt.
On leaving regular service, Terry joined the HSF.
NIGHTINGALE
Kenneth Brian NIGHTINGALE, of the Staffordshire Regiment, died on 3rd February 2023. His funeral took place on 7th March at Featherstone Methodist Church.
PARKES
Sydney PARKES started work as an apprentice at GEC in Stafford and his call up for national service was deferred until
he had finished his apprenticeship. Syd
then enlisted into The South Staffordshire Regiment for three years and he served with the 1st Battalion in Egypt and Cyprus during the EOKA Campaign. He was posted to the Signals Platoon and reached the
rank of Corporal. When his time came for demobilisation, he was offered a third stripe, but he declined and returned to GEC. He married Edith and they had six children. Later Syd worked as an electrician for the National Coal Board and when the pits closed, he became self-employed for many years. Edith passed away in 2007 and later he met his partner, Cynthia. Syd joined Hednesford Branch in 2004 and could always be counted to turn out when needed. He attended many funerals, parades and
his name was always first up for charity collection days. In short, he was a solid branch member and is sorely missed. He was often seen around Cannock shopping, always wearing his regimental blazer, he was a proud Stafford to the end.
PLANT
WO2 Steve PLANT died on 16th March. He served with The Staffordshire Regiment. His funeral took place on 18th April at Telford Crematorium.
POWELL
CSgt Malcolm ‘Mac’ POWELL, of Walsall, died on 3 March 2023 aged 79. Mac initially enrolled in the local Army Cadet Force and went on to join the newly formed E Coy Light Infantry &
Mercian Volunteers in the early 70’s. Mac served through several re-organizations of the Reserve Forces, serving with D Coy 2nd Bn The Mercian Volunteers from 1975-88 and then onto the 3rd Bn The Staffordshire Regt from 1988-95. He then transferred to 143 Plant Sqn RE V.
POWER
Michael POWER died on 24th June 2023. He served with The Staffordshire Regiment and was a member of Walsall & Bloxwich Branch. His funeral took place on 18th July at Streetly Crematorium.
PRICE
Stephen PRICE died in March 2023. He served with The Staffordshire Regiment. His funeral took place on 6th April at the Anglican methodist Church in Nottingham.
RILEY
Kenny RILEY died on 4th March 2023. He served with the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment.
ROBINSON
Maj John ROBINSON TD, of Southwell, died on 13 March 2023. Originally a South Notts Hussar, he was a Battery Comd with 3 WFR on formation and became 2IC in 1973.
ROEBUCK
Peter ROEBUCK died on 18 May 2023. Peter served with the Robin Hood Rifles Corps of Drums and 3 WFR. Peter was an active member of Long Eaton and West Notts Branch and played the bugle
at many WFR Association events.
ROYLES
LCpl Peter ROYLES died on 16th June 2023, aged 88, surrounded by his family. He joined the Army at 18 and served with the 1st Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment.
SADLER
Joe SADLER died on 8th April 2023. He served with the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment.
SCOTT
Lt Col Anthony ‘Tony’ SCOTT MBE, of Oxfordshire, died on 4 January 2023 aged 84. was commissioned in the Staffordshire Regt in 1960. He was made MBE in the 1979 Queen’s Birthday
Honours List in recognition of his time as 2IC of the POW Depot at Crickhowell. He
went from there to Command the 1st Bn The Mercian Volunteers from Nov 1980 to May 1983. Tony’s final appointment was at NATO HQ and he retired in 1989 to take up a civilian appointment at SHAPE. Later, he was Regtal Chairman and then President of the MVRA and was a volunteer with the Staffordshire Regt Museum.
SOUTHWELL
Dennis SOUTHWELL died on 11th May 2023. He served with The Staffordshire Regiment. His funeral took place on 2nd June at Stafford Crematorium.
SHEPPARD
Pte Sydney ‘Syd’ SHEPPARD, of Walsall, died on 12 June 2023. Syd was
a National Service soldier who began his training at Lichfield Barracks initially serving with The South
Staffordshire Regt and then transferring to 1st Bn The Worcestershire Regiment. He served in Malaya and the UK.
SHERWIN
Jeff SHERWIN died on 19th December 2023. He served with the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment in Malaya.
SIMPSON
Maj Michael SIMPSON TD died at the end of January 2023 aged 87. Michael enlisted in the ranks, in the Royal Marines for his National Service from 1953-55. He later transferred to the TA and was a 2Lt with The Sherwood Foresters in 1967 and then with 3 WFR as a Lt from 28 November 1970 and Acting Capt from 1 April 1971. He was promoted to Maj on 2 August 1976.
SLATER
CSgt HJ ‘John’ SLATER died on the 12 May 2023 aged 85. John served with 1 WORC
R and 1 WFR and was discharged on 23 September 1977.
SMITH
Pte Derek SMITH, of Mansfield Woodhouse, died on 27 August 2023 aged 81. After service with 17/21 L
as a Tpr, Derek returned to Notts and in 1985 joined the Home Service Force with
5 (Mansfield) Pl, F Coy 3 WFR until 3 June 1994. He was a strong supporter of WFRA and 3 WFR Branch events.
SMITH
Gordon SMITH died on 29th May 2023. He served with the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment.
STEEN
Bob STEEN died on 12th April 2023. He served with the 1st Battalion The Cheshire Regiment.
