HSY CADETS SHINE AT
BRIGADE FIRST AID
COMPETITION
This year, the county took two outstanding cadet teams from the County First Aid
Competition to represent us at the Brigade level, held at the Stainton Cadet Training
Centre. It was a weekend full of camaraderie, learning, and impressive skill and
teamwork!
The two teams, proudly representing C and D Companies, travelled up on Saturday,
eager to tackle the competition on Sunday. Saturday evening was spent brushing up
on their skills, squeezing in a few more training sessions to ensure they were at the top
of their game. Each team was made up of four cadets, all buzzing with excitement (and
maybe a few nerves) as they prepared to go head-to-head with other top teams from
across the North of England.
The competition kicked off with the team test, where each squad worked together to
assess two casualties in a simulated first-aid scenario. Every aspect of their teamwork,
assessment skills, and treatment techniques was observed and graded by the judges.
Next came the individual tests, challenging each cadet on their personal knowledge
and first-aid abilities. A true test of knowledge, skill and calmness under pressure.
After an intense day of competition, the results were in! HSY Team Alpha earned an
impressive 3rd place, and HSY Team Bravo followed closely in 4th, just a few points
behind. The Commandant, Colonel Nicholle King, of Durham ACF presented the
medals and trophies, with Durham ACF taking the top two spots by the narrowest of
margins, with all teams separated by only ten points.
Captain Adrian Hoyle, County First Aid Training Officer said: “As the CFATO, I couldn’t
be prouder of both teams. Their hard work, dedication, and skill shone through every
moment of the competition. Special thanks go to SMI Ann Bowers and SSI Sara Grundy
for their commitment in preparing the teams. With this experience under their belts,
here’s hoping HSY takes it up a notch next year to clinch the top prize and represent our
county on the National stage!”
