Headquarter Company is an unwieldy beast with a mind of its own that is as changeable as the Northern Ireland weather. That, along with the diversity of character of the personnel the Company contains, is part of what makes commanding it so much fun. HQ Company, the enablers of the Battalion, have had a challenging and frenetic year. The Company has facilitated and supported 2 MERCIAN’s Mission Specific Training (MST) while at the same time those elements of the Company which are soon to deploy have taken part in that training themselves. Simultaneously the Company has
turnover of personnel within HQ Company. There was particular
flux during the summer of 2011 as we received the uplift personnel who will augment Battalion Headquarters and Departments on the forthcoming Op HERRICK 15 tour, and also took under command those soldiers from the other Companies who will not deploy forward and will instead join the ROG. This turnover has been so extensive that regrettably it is not possible to highlight all the attached and detached personnel individually, although a good number are
created and prepared the Rear Operations Group
(ROG) for the forthcoming tour; also formed
from elements of itself. (And if you understood
all that you may well be one step ahead of the
relatively recently arrived OC). Support to MST
has involved projection of enabling capability to
the UK mainland or Germany on numerous occasions to the point where the various G4 (logistics) elements of the Company almost
met themselves coming back. All Departments have worked similarly hard throughout the worthwhile but intense MST period and everyone involved can be rightly proud of their efforts. The stage is now set for Op HERRICK 15. As we move forward to face the demanding period ahead, there is no doubt in my mind that all members of the Company will rise to the challenge. Whether deploying forward or becoming part of the Rear Operations Group, that challenge is equal but different. Wherever members of HQ Company are physically based over the coming months, we will always remember that we are part of the same team with a common purpose.
Since that last edition of the Mercian Eagle there has been a huge
mentioned in the respective Department articles. The number of personnel under the HQ Company banner has been well over 200 on several occasions; indeed one of the biggest challenges in recent months has been keeping track of who is actually in HQ Coy on any given day. Of particular note, we bid farewell at the
beginning of Jun 11 to the outgoing OC, Maj Tony Seager, on leaving the Army for civilian life. All members of the Company wish him well for the future. WO2 (CSM) Tim Humber took over as CSM HQ Coy in Sep 10 and filled that role for 10 months before moving across to D (Fire Sp) Coy as CSM. The Company then saw the return of WO2 (CSM) ‘Lofty’ Worboys, who had obviously enjoyed the job of CSM HQ Coy so much the first time round that he decided to come back for a second go. WO2 Worboys was recently awarded the MSM for his role as the Rear Operations Group CSM during Op HERRICK 10, for which he is congratulated. The Company adds its wholehearted congratulations to those in the CO’s Foreword to Capt Noel Magill, QM(T), and WO2 (RQMS) Higginbottom, RQMS(M), who where both awarded the MBE.
