Is your female dog neutered? Thrapston Veterinary Surgery have recently seen several bitches brought into the surgery with phantom/false pregnancies. Several of these lovely girls have been really quite miserable, and have needed medical treatment.
Another medical condition that may arise in the weeks following a season, again
due to hormones, is ‘pyometra’, where the bitch develops an infection of the womb. Pyometra can make dogs very poorly, and is sometimes life threatening. Diagnosis and treatment requires blood tests, intravenous fluid therapy, antibiotics and (frequently) emergency surgery.
The cost of treatment for pyometra may be up to four times that of a routine spay, and the dog is at far more risk of complications.
